Wood Storks
Late in the day wood storks gathered not far from my house.  The sunlight cast an unusual golden color on their normally silver/gray heads.

Wood storks are the largest wading bird native to our country. They love to gather together and are rarely seen alone. They primarily eat medium-sized fish, crayfish, amphibians and reptiles.
Their hunting technique is unique as they will move their partially opened bill through water, snapping up prey when the prey comes in contact with their mouth.

Wood Storks. Oil on Canvas. 16 x 20 inches. 2016.

  1. Ruth, This is Beth. I've seen the Wood Storks as I made my way home from Starbucks at Main and 2nd Street in Safety Harbor. The first time just one was crossing 7th South. He was in the middle of the road in front of me, then took a step in front of my stopped car and watched me like I was the big bird crossing the road. Beautiful! xo

  3. These hang out in the evenings on 13th a block south of Main Street. I photographed them there and down along Alligator Lake and then did this painting based on those photos. Thanks for the comment Beth!
